General Plumbing
in Watford &
Hertfordshire
Everyday domestic plumbing done properly — dripping taps, running toilets, leaking pipework, low water pressure and burst pipes. No call-out fee, no subcontractors, and a written 12-month guarantee on our workmanship.
What plumbing actually covers
What it is
General domestic plumbing covers everything that carries water around your home: hot and cold supply pipework, taps and mixers, toilets and cisterns, basins, baths and showers, waste and trap work, stopcocks and isolation valves, outside taps, ballvalves, immersion heaters, water softeners, and cold-water tanks and cylinders. If it leaks, drips, bangs, runs slowly or has stopped altogether, it falls under this service.
Who it's for
Homeowners, landlords, letting agents and small commercial premises across Watford and the surrounding towns. We're equally happy with a ten-minute tap washer and with a full re-pipe of a bathroom or kitchen — and because we're Gas Safe registered (No. 212325), we can also work safely on anything that touches your boiler, cylinder or heating system.
When you need it
Call as soon as something is leaking, however small. A weeping compression joint or a slow drip under a sink is cheap to fix today and expensive to fix once it's soaked a ceiling or a floor. Also worth booking: water hammer and banging pipes, poor flow at one tap, a toilet that never stops filling, a stopcock you can't turn, or the annual check of a water softener or unvented cylinder.
Why professional help matters
Plumbing is one of those trades where the difference between a proper job and a bodge only shows up months later. We use the right fitting for the pipe and location, we isolate and drain rather than working live, we pressure-test what we've altered, and we leave the work accessible for the next person. Matt has been on the tools for 38 years, including his time at British Gas — nothing about UK domestic pipework is unfamiliar.
The cost of leaving it
Small plumbing faults never stay small. Water always finds the cheapest route out of a system, and it usually finds it through a ceiling.
What can go wrong
- A dripping tap wastes thousands of litres a year and, on a metered supply, quietly adds to every bill.
- A slow leak inside a wall or under a floor can rot joists, blow plaster and destroy flooring long before you see a stain.
- A seized or hidden stopcock means that when a pipe does burst, nobody in the house can shut the water off.
- A running overflow or failing ballvalve can flood a loft, and an unserviced unvented cylinder is a genuine safety risk, not just an inconvenience.
- Escape of water is one of the most common — and most expensive — home insurance claims in the UK, and insurers increasingly ask who carried out the work.
Common mistakes we see
- Tightening a leaking compression fitting harder and harder instead of stripping it, cleaning the olive and remaking the joint.
- Using push-fit inside an inaccessible wall or floor void where a soldered or pressed joint belongs.
- Fitting a new tap or mixer onto old, tired flexi tails — the tails are usually what fails next.
- Mixing pipe materials and fittings without the correct inserts and supports, which causes leaks and water hammer down the line.
- Chasing 'low water pressure' at one tap without checking the stopcock, the isolation valve and the aerator first — often it's a two-minute fix, not a re-pipe.

In detail
Below are the plumbing jobs we're called out for most often across Watford, Northwood, Rickmansworth, Pinner, Bushey, Hatch End, Stanmore and Greater London — and how we approach each one.
Leaks and burst pipes
The first job is always to isolate and stop the damage, then find the actual source rather than the place the water happens to appear. We trace leaks on copper, plastic and old imperial pipework, repair or replace the failed section, and check the surrounding joints while we're there — a pipe that has failed once has usually been stressed along its length. Where a leak is behind plaster or under a floor, we lift and reinstate as neatly as possible and tell you honestly what will need making good afterwards. For frozen or burst pipes in winter we can also lag exposed runs to stop it happening again next cold snap.
Taps, mixers and showers
Dripping taps are usually a washer, cartridge or ceramic disc — cheap and quick if caught early. Where a tap is beyond economic repair, or where you simply want a better one, we supply and fit new taps and mixers, always with new flexible tails and new isolation valves so the next service is a two-minute job rather than a full drain-down. On showers we deal with poor flow, temperature swings, failed thermostatic cartridges and leaking shower valves — and we'll tell you honestly whether the problem is the valve or the water pressure feeding it.
Toilets, cisterns and waste
Running toilets, weak flushes, leaking pans and slow-filling cisterns are among the most common calls we get. We replace flush valves, fill valves, syphons, cistern seals and pan connectors, refit loose or rocking pans, and clear and re-seal traps and waste runs. On concealed and wall-hung frames we can get to the working parts without wrecking the tiling — that's a job worth having someone experienced do.
Stopcocks, isolation valves and outside taps
Every home should have a stopcock that actually turns and isolation valves at the appliances that matter. We replace seized stopcocks, fit lever isolation valves under sinks, basins, WCs and at the boiler, and install outside taps with the correct double-check valve and a proper internal isolator so the tap can be drained down before winter.
Low pressure and poor flow
Poor flow has a handful of usual suspects: a partially closed stopcock, a blocked aerator or filter, a failing pressure-reducing valve, furred-up old galvanised pipework, or an undersized supply. We measure static and dynamic pressure and flow rate rather than guessing, then tell you which of those it is. Where the answer is that the mains simply can't deliver what a large house needs, the honest fix is usually an unvented cylinder or an accumulator — and we'll say so rather than selling you a re-pipe that won't help.
Cylinders, tanks, immersions and softeners
We service, repair and replace hot water cylinders (vented and unvented), cold-water storage tanks, ballvalves, immersion heaters and thermostats. Unvented cylinder work is carried out under our G3 qualification and should be serviced annually — the expansion vessel, the pressure-reducing valve and the temperature and pressure relief valve are all safety-critical. We also service and repair water softeners, which are common in this hard-water part of Hertfordshire.
Kitchen and bathroom plumbing
Fitting a new kitchen or bathroom? We handle first-fix and second-fix plumbing: moving supply and waste runs, adding isolation, plumbing in sinks, dishwashers, washing machines, basins, baths, showers and WCs, and pressure-testing everything before the units and tiling go back. If you want the whole bathroom designed, plumbed, tiled and finished by one team, that's covered on our bathroom installations page.
Landlords and letting agents
We work with landlords across Watford and Greater London on reactive plumbing repairs alongside annual CP12 gas safety certificates and boiler servicing. We're comfortable arranging access directly with tenants, we photograph the work, and we invoice cleanly — one contractor for the gas and the plumbing keeps the paperwork simple.
Frequently asked questions
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. There's no call-out fee for plumbing work. You're told the price of the job before we start, and if the fault turns out to be bigger than it first appeared we stop and call you before spending anything more.
How quickly can you come out to a leak?
For genuine emergencies — a burst pipe, an uncontrollable leak, no water — call the mobile on 07870 210610. We run a 24/7 emergency line and aim to be with local customers within around an hour. Non-urgent plumbing is usually booked within a few working days.
How do I turn my water off in an emergency?
Find your internal stopcock — most commonly under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs cloakroom, or near where the mains enters the house — and turn it clockwise. If it won't move, don't force it; call us. Once the immediate emergency is dealt with, replacing a seized stopcock is a small, quick job that's well worth doing.
Can you fix a dripping tap, or do I need a new one?
Most drips are a worn washer, ceramic disc or cartridge and can be repaired the same visit. Where the tap body itself is worn or the parts are obsolete — common on older mixers — replacing it is the cheaper answer over time. We'll tell you which you're looking at before we start.
Do you do plumbing as well as gas and heating work?
Yes. Premier Heating is a Gas Safe registered heating company (No. 212325) that also carries out general domestic plumbing. That's an advantage on any job where the plumbing meets the boiler, the cylinder or the heating pipework — it's all one visit and one guarantee.
Do you unblock drains?
We clear internal blockages — sink and basin traps, waste pipes, slow-draining showers and baths, and blocked WC pan connectors. Blocked external drains and sewers needing jetting or CCTV survey are a specialist job, and we'll point you to the right contractor rather than pretend otherwise.
Is your plumbing work guaranteed?
Yes — 12 months on our workmanship, in writing, on top of any manufacturer warranty covering the parts fitted. We also carry £5m public liability insurance and employers' liability cover.
Do you cover my area?
Yes — we cover Watford, Northwood, Rickmansworth, Pinner, Bushey, Hatch End, Stanmore, Middlesex and Greater London. If you're nearby but not listed, please call and we'll almost certainly still come out.
