Half-configured smart controls are worse than a good mechanical thermostat. ## The cost of leaving it A smart thermostat bought off a shelf and wired in on/off doesn't save what it should. Here's what we fit and why. ### Tado (Matt's personal recommendation) Tado is what Matt runs in his own home. Excellent room-by-room smart TRV ecosystem, strong OpenTherm support with modulating boilers, weather compensation built in, and reliable geofencing that turns down the heating when the last person leaves the house. ### Hive, Nest and others Hive is a solid, straightforward smart thermostat with great scheduling and multi-zone support. Nest is well-designed and learns your patterns over time. Both work well when configured properly. We fit all major brands. ### Vaillant vSMART / VRC 700 On Vaillant boilers, the manufacturer's own controls use eBUS to modulate the boiler flow temperature far more accurately than any third-party control. Where the boiler is Vaillant, this is often the best-performing option. ### OpenTherm and load compensation OpenTherm is a modulating communication protocol between thermostat and boiler. Instead of on/off, the thermostat tells the boiler exactly how hot to run.
